  1. Problem of disconnection

  2. Sometimes, there may be problem of disconnection even if your user name and password are both correct. Thee may be several reasons of such disconnection. Some of the typical reasons are:

    1. Your modem is not properly installed and is having problem holding connection.

    2. Your telephone line has too many connection points or branches and the quality of such interconnections are not very good.

    3. Your telephone line is a pair gain (PG) line. Normally, due to the nature of PG lines, the internet connection using them is usually very slow compared to normal lines. Sometimes, however, connection establishment itself may not be successful.

    4. In many occasions, disconnection may occur due to improper settings of the modem speed. Reducing the speed of the modem may be a solution of such problems.

    5. Another cause of undesirable performance and problems of disconnections etc can be underperformance by the related features of the computer or some problem with these features. The main features of computer that are relevant here are the Dial-up Adaptor and TCP-IP protocol. The coming sections of this page discuss these features and their troubleshoot in more detail.

  3. Controlling the speed of the modem

For proper results, you have to change the modem speed at two locations. First at the dialup account and second at the modem item of the control panel.

    1. To change speed of modem on the dial-up account, go to My Computer -> Dial-up networking and right click on the dial-up account. Here it is ‘NTCnet’. Click on Properties. (Fig. 1)

    3. On the new window that comes up, select the new speed of the modem at the bottom of the window. (Fig. 3). You can select lower values if the connections are not successful at higher values.

      figure 3

    4. To change modem speed from the Control Panel, open Control Panel and double-click on Modem icon. (Fig. 4)

  4. Checking configuration of dial-up services in the computer

Sometimes, refreshing the dial-up services (or reinstalling them) may be a good solution of problems in getting connected such as disconnection, no data transfer over the connection and so on.

There are two components that need to operate correctly to have a desirable dial-up performance. These are:
    • Dial-up adapter
    • TCP / IP protocol

To check and set the properties of the dial-up and related services in the computer, proceed as follows:

    1. Open the Control Panel and double click on Network icon. (Fig. 6)
